City Life –

I was always a bit of a city boy. There were roaming fields with cows and sheep just 10 minutes from my back garden and I never even knew.  I never knew because I never went in any direction other than the city centre. We weren’t a family that went on hikes, or camping trips. I had never really seen a mountain until I moved to France. I’ve never visited any English National parks.

In 2013 I left England and that’s when things started to change. By 2015 I lived in a French city called Annecy, where there were amazing hike trails as high as 1,300 metres and less than an hours walk from the city centre. This opened my eyes to the amazing wonder of nature. The thrill of the outdoors…and then I returned to England.

Exploring in the garden

I started to Experience my home town in a different way. I found cycle routes and countryside in places I never knew. Places I had always over looked growing up.

I started to think back to my University days. I lived in Newcastle. A city steeped in history and surrounded by beauty. But I frequented the bars, clubs and student union restaurants. My friends from China would spend their weekends visiting castles and monuments and I was always slightly in awe of their energy. I had never really done that. I think it’s so natural to take for granted the amazing things on our doorstep simply because they’re so familiar and seemingly ‘unspecial’.

Travelling is so popular these days. The more exotic the place, the more people want to know. They crave the stories and sights of other cultures. Where grey clouds don’t visit and English tongues don’t speak.

But I’ve found so much beauty in my back garden. Beauty I can experience on a whim just 30 minutes from my house without spending more than a few gallons of petrol. I’m making a list. A list of places I want to visit in the UK before I expand to Europe and then the rest of the world. This is going to be a year of exploration. Not just the far away lands but those closest to me. I’m going exploring in my back garden.

I hope you’ll join me.
