Birthday Discovery –

Last year I was fortunate enough to have birthday celebrations in 3 countries. For the past 6 years I’ve tried to celebrate my birthday somewhere different, doing something new. Sweden, Los Angeles, France, Italy, England. It doesn’t matter if I’m 10 miles or 10,000 miles away from home. For me the key is discovery.

A huge part of my growth as a person is through putting myself in new, uncomfortable, enlightening, humbling, scary situations and travel has a large part to play in that. Whenever I find myself in these new places and situations I discover something new about myself. Whether it’s dealing with the anxiety of going somewhere alone, the awe of seeing the mountains for the first time or the inner turmoil of experiencing a culture more racist than my own (I’ll write about all of these in time). They all spark something in me that I might not have otherwise been exposed to. They all prompt me to discover myself. To grow myself.

For me, that’s what becoming a year older is all about.

My love for the French Mountains

This particular birthday fell when I was in Annecy, France. But over the week I also spent it in Divonne a little higher up in the mountains. Now, this wasn’t the first time I’ve seen mountains (I think that was back in 2013). But I do remember the moment so clearly. I was overcome by the insignificance of my own size. I was super freaking pumped and a little lost for words at the same time. Since then I’ve just completely loved mountains and the beauty of meditating beside them. So spending my birthday how I did gave me so much opportunity for reflection and wonder. I became a year old and a little more grateful for everything around me. Including the privilege to travel on my birthday.
